Meditation can sound intimidating for some. A lot of us may think “No, that’s not me” or “That’s weird”, but you may be surprised at the calmness you feel once you begin simple meditations. Your overall quality of life will improve once you add meditation in to your daily life. Meditation has been around for thousands of years, in many forms. Scholars and regular individuals have found benefits in meditation and mindfulness for thousands of years. So why not start now?
How To Begin:
- Prepare a Comfortable Area to Sit –
Make this your space and make it like you want. It can be anywhere that you want but it is nice to make it your ritual space to meditate at every day that you practice.
- Sit Upright With Your Legs Crossed
It is easy to start in a seated position with your palms facing upward, resting on your legs. This may feel uncomfortable at first but you can adjust it to however you feel most at ease. I think it is important to sit upright so it’s less easy to doze off to sleep.
- Breathe (Set a timer for 5 minutes)
Using a timer is a great way to start small and increase your meditation times. I used Headspace to get started and found it extremely beneficial. The guided meditations help to remain focused and remind you that it is OK if your mind wanders off. Simply bring it back to your breath and your practice continues. The Headspace app is linked above and there are other similar apps that make the initial meditations less intimidating.

That Sounds Too Easy, Jordan…
You may think that sounds too easy but it really is that simple. There is no “right” way to meditate. You can do it however you feel most comfortable. You can meditate in your favorite chair or on the floor. You can play soft music or you can be in silence. You can breathe softly or you can count your breaths in and out. It simply is however you feel most comfortable.
Silence + Stillness will lead to a better understanding of your thoughts and allow more happiness to enter into your conscious.
